Ingredients
  

For the cabbage rolls:

  • 1 head of cabbage large
  • 1 cup white rice, cooked
  • 450 g ground pork (or beef, or a mix)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium carrot grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika

For the sauce:

  • 2 cups tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • Prepare the cabbage: Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Core the cabbage and place it in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Carefully remove softened leaves and repeat until all large leaves are separated. Set them aside to cool.

  • Make the filling: In a large bowl, mix cooked rice, ground meat, chopped onion, grated carrot, minced garlic, egg, salt, pepper, and paprika. Stir until well combined.
  • Assemble the rolls: Take a cabbage leaf and cut out the thick stem if necessary. Place about 2 tablespoons of filling in the center, fold in the sides, and roll tightly. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
  • Prepare the sauce: In a saucepan, heat oil over medium heat. Add tomato paste and cook for 1 minute. Stir in tomato sauce, broth, sugar, oregano, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Cook the cabbage rolls: Place a layer of leftover cabbage leaves at the bottom of a large pot or baking dish. Arrange cabbage rolls on top, seam side down. Pour the tomato sauce over the rolls, covering them completely.
  • Simmer or bake:
    Stovetop: Cover the pot and simmer on low heat for about 1.5 hours.Oven: Cover and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1.5 hours.
