A traditional Latvian trifle made from grated rye bread, whipped cream, and tart berry jam – rich, refreshing, and uniquely Baltic.
Ingredients
- 150 g dry Latvian-style rye bread (grated)
- 2 tbsp sugar
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- 200 ml whipping cream
- 1 tbsp powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 150 g berry jam (blackcurrant, lingonberry, cranberry)
Instructions
- Toast the bread: Grate or crumble the rye bread finely. Toast in a dry skillet until crispy and fragrant. Cool slightly, then mix with cinnamon and sugar.
- Whip the cream: In a chilled bowl, beat the cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.
- Layer the dessert: In individual glasses or a trifle dish, layer rye bread, berry jam, and whipped cream. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a dollop of cream.
- Chill: Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
- Optional: Garnish with fresh berries, mint leaves, or a dusting of grated chocolate 🍫✨
Sounds amazing! I’ve never heard of this before, but that combination of flavors intrigues me. Definitely trying this sometime.
